According to the report of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police service, it was reported that there were up to 9,520 motor crashes involving 16,226 vehicles between 1st January to 31st July 2021, with 1,706 persons killed and 9,299 others injured in those accidents. The head of the research Unit narrated that the factors of these accidents include drink-driving, dangerous driving, speeding, careless driving, wrongful overtaking, poor vision, mobile phone usage among others. He encouraged that they should be awareness creation in these areas to stem the tide these incidents.

It was in this vein that the Samuel Amo Tobbin Foundation in collaboration with Priority Insurance, Tobinco Pharmaceuticals Limited, Road safety advocate, Entrance University Hospital and the National Health insurance scheme sensitized and educated drivers on road safety, registered drivers on the National health insurance scheme and conducted health screening exercise. Areas screened include, prostate, HB, hepatitis B, BMI, Breast cancer for the women around the station. There were nurses from the Entrance University hospital and Doctors to support with the health screening exercise.

The Road safety advocate, Rev Cyril Crabbe and the Priority Insurance Educated the transport officials on road safety of which they asked several questions and raised a grave concern on the bad road network which breakdown their vehicles.

Drivers surrounding the Takoradi station troop in, in their numbers to register and to have their health status checked. Doctors encouraged drivers to be checking their health status regularly to avoid getting sick unknowingly.

The Foundation’s was able to register pregnant women unto the national health insurance who do not have money to do so scheme as well as drivers.

With regards to the breast cancer awareness, at the end of the screening exercise there were 3 breast cancer cases of which they were referred to the hospital to support.
